BURLINGAME, Calif. – No. 17 Stanford collected its fourth win of the season with solid team play sending the Cardinal past No. 38 San Diego State 7-0 Saturday afternoon indoors at the Broadway Tennis Center.
Stanford (4-1) took an early lead by capturing the doubles point thanks to victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. David Wilczynski and Yale Goldberg played phenomenally with a 6-0 win, before Tom Fawcett and Sameer Kumar clinched the point with a 6-3 score in the No. 2 spot over SDSU’s Sander Gjoels-Andersen and Jonas Meinzer.
Singles play was all Stanford as well with Michael Genender ripping past Raul de la Torre 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot, which Nolan Paige followed up with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3. The clincher one again came from Tom Fawcett, who collected his third of the season as he defeated 53rd-ranked Freddy Gelbrich 6-3, 6-2 to make it 4-0.
The Cardinal closed out the match with three more wins as Sameer Kumar pushed his win streak to five with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 before teammate Maciek Romanowicz finished his match in the No. 4 spot, topping Jonas Meinzer 6-1, 6-2. Wrapping up the day was David Wilczynski, who came out strong with a 6-4 win before Milen Ianakiev rallied back to take set two 6-3. Wilczynski composed himself in the tiebreak to take the win 10-1.
Stanford returns home Tuesday, Feb. 2, hosting Santa Clara at 3 p.m. at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
