WAIKOLOA, Hawaii – Maverick McNealy carded a final-round 65 to take second at the Amer Ari Invitational while leading Stanford to a share of 10-place with UCLA.
McNealy moved up five spots Saturday during the final round of the 54-hole event for his fourth top-5 showing on the season. It was the third time he shot a 65 in a Cardinal uniform.
Stanford (278-285-278) was 10-under collectively on the day and 23-under for the tournament at the par-72 Waikoloa Kings’ Course. Arizona State (-38) won the event, which featured 18 teams, and Washington’s Cheng-Tsung Pan took medalist honors with a 17-under 199.
"The guys hung tough today," said Knowles Family Director of Men's Golf Conrad Ray. "We hit the ball well all week but left some good shots out there with our wedges and putting off of the Bermuda grass. There were positives to draw from and McNealy put in some great work. There is plenty to prep for at our next event."
McNealy (67-69-65) was 15-under overall and 7-under Saturday. His seven birdies went along with two bogeys while he managed an eagle on the par-4 fifth. McNealy hit driver from 296 yards away and brought it to 13 feet away.
David Boote’s only bogey in the third round came on the par-5 14th, while his four birdies put him at 3-under on the day and 5-under overall to tie for 32nd. Boote posted scores of 72, 70 and 69.
Viraat Badhwar (69-72-74) was 2-over during his final stretch and 1-under for the tournament. He tied for 53rd.
Jeffrey Swegle (70-76-71) tied for 66th and Dominick Francks (80-74-73) tied for 93rd.
Competing as an individual, Patrick Grimes tied for 76th with scores of 75-72-73.
Stanford returns to action Feb. 16-18 during The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, California.
