STANFORD, Calif. – No. 16 Stanford took on sixth-ranked Cal in an unscored triple-distance meet Wednesday at Avery Aquatic Center.
In the unscored triple-distance meet, student-athletes divided into specialty groups and competed with one another in three races to determine a specialty champion in each of swimming’s six event domains: sprint (50, 100, 200 free), distance (500, 1,000 free), fly (50, 100, 200), breast (50, 100, 200), back (50, 100, 200) and individual medley (100, 200, 400).
Andrew Liang (21.60) and Connor Black (22.11) went 1-2 in the 50-yard butterfly to start the meet between the Bay Area rivals. Liang added another win in the 100-yard butterfly (47.50) and was second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:47.23).
Patrick Conaton (23.36) was second in the 50-yard backstroke behind Cal’s Ryan Murphy (22.10). Murphy won the 100-yard backstroke in 47.49 and Conaton (49.79) tapped third.
Brock Turner needed 1:48.32 for third in the 200-yard backstroke.
Daniel Le’s 25.93 was good for second in the 50-yard breaststroke. Le (56.28) and Christian Brown (56.72) went 3-4 in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Le (2:02.02) claiming second in the 200-yard version of the discipline.
Thomas Stephens went 20.56 for third in the 50-yard freestyle. Seth Stubblefield (20.52) touched first for Cal in front of teammate Tyler Messerschmidt (20.53).
Stephens later touched second during both the 200-yard freestyle (1:37.69) and 100-yard freestyle (44.71).
Danny Thomson’s 9:20.35 in the 1,000-yard freestyle was second-best among the pack, but his 4:31.70 in the 500-yard edition gave him the win by nearly a second over Cal’s Janardan Burns (4:32.62).
Second-place Gray Umbach was Stanford’s highest finisher in the 100-yard individual medley (50.70) and 200-yard individual medley (1:49.93). He was third in the 400-yard individual medley with Curtis Ogren (3:53.14) taking silver.
Stanford teamed to go 1:20.79 to win the meet-ending 200-yard freestyle relay.
