Cardinal Fights Off Ducks

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 1 Stanford women’s volleyball team kept its perfect start in tact with a 25-23, 25-16, 17-25, 25-17 win over No. 11 Oregon, Friday, at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal move to 13-0 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-12, while the Ducks suffer their first setback of the year and drop to 12-1 and 2-1 in conference.

Redshirt freshman middle blocker Merete Lutz led the Cardinal with 13 kills on 22 errorless swings (.591) to improve her nation-best hitting percentage. The Houston, Texas native also tallied four blocks, two assists and a dig. Junior middle blocker Inky Ajanaku added 11 kills on a .360 attack percentage to go with a match-high six blocks.

Junior outside hitter Jordan Burgess posted her team-best seventh double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs on a .320 hitting percentage. The human biology major also put down a career high four service aces. Senior opposite Morgan Boukather finished with nine kills and four blocks, while junior Brittany Howard posted a season-best nine kills and 11 digs.

Junior setter Madi Bugg controlled the offense with 43 assists while collecting four kills, eight digs and three blocks. Senior libero Kyle Gilbert tallied 16 digs and two assists. Gilbert now has 1,611 career digs moving past Kristin Richards (2003-06) for second all-time in program history.

Oregon challenged Stanford in the opening set, but the Cardinal rallied from behind to win the first set for the 12th time this season. The Ducks were led by junior outside hitter Martenne Bettendorf’s 14 kills on a .448 hitting percentage. Sophomore libero Amanda Benson finished with a match-high 20 digs.

The Cardinal wraps-up the weekend on Saturday, Oct. 4 against visiting Oregon State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Maples Pavilion. A free live stream will be available on the Stanford women’s volleyball schedule page on gostanford.com.
