COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Stephanie Phipps finished sixth and and Kassidy Cook was eighth in the 3-meter diving competition at the NCAA Zone E Diving Meet on Friday.
Phipps (627.25) and Cook (610.50) barely missed out on guaranteed NCAA qualifying spots as the top four earned trips to the national championship meet. Haley Ishimatsu of USC won her second Zone title of the week by totaling 661.55 points.
"Stephanie had an amazing finals but it still wasn't enough," said diving coach Dr. Rick Schavone. "I was extremely proud of Kassidy, who just started diving 3-meter a week ago. To place eighth with such little practice was really impressive."
Tomorrow represents the divers’ final chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Stanford divers other than Alex Clay must finish in the top two in the platform in order to guarantee a bid to the NCAA meet. Clay qualified with a second-place performance in the 1-meter yesterday.
Zone E has eight spots at the NCAA meet. Once a diver has qualified, her spot in the order of qualifying is skipped over once the Zone’s eight divers have been selected.
Phipps still has an outside chance if each of the top three in platform already have NCAA spots secured.
