FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Stanford posted top-three finishes in a pair of relays to begin the 2013 Pac-12 Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships which began Sunday at the King County Aquatic Center. The Cardinal ranks third among the six scoring teams at the meet, totaling 66 points behind Cal (74) and USC (70).
"I was very happy with our relay efforts, and we had great leadoff legs on both of our 800 free relay," Goldman Family Director of Men's Swimming Ted Knapp said.
The meet began with the 200 medley relay as David Nolan, Andrew Saeta, Jack Lane and Aaron Wayne teamed to go 1:24.48 for an NCAA A-cut and second-place finish.
Cal claimed the 200 medley relay for the sixth year in a row with a 1:24.42. Stanford was only .06 seconds behind.
That output was followed by another NCAA A-cut (6:22.32) by Tom Kremer, Sean Duggan, Mitchell Stoehr and Thomas Stephens in the 800 free relay. That squad finished third, while Chris Pickard, Burke Sims, Jeff Garnier and Ethan Hallowell posted an NCAA A-cut in 6:24.04.
USC was victorious in the 800 free relay (6:16.88) for the Trojans' first win the event since 2010.
Also highlighting the night for the Cardinal was Mack Montgomery, whose 1:43.70 in the 200 fly qualified him for the NCAA Championships.
The Pac-12 Championships continue Monday with preliminaries at 11 a.m. (PT) and finals at 6 p.m. The swimming events in day two are the 500 free, 200 individual medley, 50 free and the 200 free relay.
