LOS ANGELES- No. 14 Stanford opened its pivotal SoCal road swing with a 4-3 victory over No. 4 UCLA on Friday afternoon.
The Cardinal (11-2, 5-0 Pac-12), which has now won seven straight matches, can complete a sweep of its road trip with a win tomorrow at No. 6 USC (12 p.m.).
UCLA (13-3, 4-1 Pac-12) lost for the first time in five games.
Stanford captured the doubles point, with its No. 2 duo of Ellen Tsay registering an 8-3 victory after the first two courts had split.
The Cardinal increased its lead to 2-0 when UCLA's Chanelle Van Nguyen retired in her match against Tan due to injury.
Catherine Harrison followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 5 spot, ending Tsay's team-best eight-match winning streak and bringing the Bruins to within 2-1.
Following Kristie Ahn's 6-2, 6-0 victory over Pamela Montez on court two, Krista Hardebeck provided the clincher with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Kyle McPhillips at the No. 3 position.
