TUCSON, Ariz. - Eighth-ranked Stanford pulled off the upset of No. 6 Arizona to complete its weekend Pac-12 Conference women's swimming and diving dual meet sweep.
One day after downing No. 20 Arizona State, the Cardinal stepped up to challenge once again with Saturday's 161-139 win at the Hillenbrand Aquatics Center behind a pair of individual wins by Maya DiRado.
Stanford worked from behind after Arizona notched early wins in the 200 medley relay and 1,000 free.
Andi Murez (1:46.79) got the Cardinal motor running with a win in the 200 free. Stanford then took three of the top five spots in the 100 back, led by Felicia Lee's 54.28.
Sarah Haase (1:02.06) and Katie Olsen (1:02.18) steadied Stanford in the 100 breast by going 2-3 in the race.
Andie Taylor (1:59.69) touched ahead of teammate Kirstie Chen (2:01.90) to keep the momentum going with a 1-2 finish in the 200 fly.
The 50 free featured a first-place finish by Maddy Schaefer in 22.56, who one race later took second by going 49.10 in the 100 free. Murez was third in the event with a 49.71.
DiRado (1:56.26) was first in the 200 back, followed by second-place Annemarie Thayer (1:58.16).
Olsen (2:13.26) rebounded with a win in the 200 breast while Taylor (4:50.60), Allison Brown (4:56.47) and Julia Anderson (5:02.20) controlled the 500 free by finishing 2-3-4.
DiRado (2:00.52) cashed in on the daily double with a win in the 200 individual medley and was joined in the top three by Sarah Haase (2:02.92).
Stephanie Phipps was second in the 1-meter (290.30) and 3-meter (293.25) events.
Stanford put a feather in its (swim) cap when Murez, Lee, Julia Ama and Schaefer won the 400 free relay in 3:18.31.
The Cardinal returns home next weekend for two more league dual meets against UCLA (Feb. 1) and USC (Feb. 2). Live results will be available at GoStanford.com.
