UNIVERSITY Park, Pa. - Mariah Nogueira headed in Taylor McCann's corner kick with under three minutes left to answer a Penn State comeback with a 3-2 Stanford victory in nonconference women's soccer action Friday.
Nogueira's goal at 87:24 came only 4 minutes, 24 seconds after No. 6 Penn State tied the score. It was the second big goal in as many matches for Nogueira, whose second-half header in the season opener against Santa Clara tied the match and sparked the No. 1 Cardinal to a 6-1 rout.
The victory was the25th consecutive for Stanford (2-0), which extended its regular-season unbeaten streak to 64, dating back to 2008.
Stanford rallied from an early deficit to take the lead on goals by Alex Doll - the first of the sophomore's collegiate career -- and Sydney Payne, the latter in the 63rd minute on a pass from Doll.
However, Penn State (2-1) equalized at 83:00 on a penalty kick by Christine Nairn, setting the scene for Nogueira. The goal was the 16th of her collegiate career for the senior captain.
The match is part of the Penn State Invitational. Stanford concludes tournament play on Sunday (9 a.m.) against West Virginia (1-2) at Penn State, and returns home Aug. 31 (4 p.m.) against Boston College.
