OJAI, Calif.- Saturday's women's semifinal round at the Pac-12 Championships will have a distinct Stanford feel, with three players advancing after posting two victories apiece on Friday afternoon.
Top-seeded Nicole Gibbs cruised in her two matches on Friday, blanking California's Tayler Davis 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 16 before putting away fellow Golden Bear Annie Goransson 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Gibbs, who was pushed to three sets in her opening-round victory on Thursday, looked sharp on Friday in surrendering only two games combined on the afternoon.
Gibbs will square off against teammate Stacey Tan in Saturday's semifinals. Tan knocked off a pair of seeded and highly-ranked players on Friday to continue her tournament run. After taking down seventh-ranked and fourth-seeded Jana Juricova of California 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the round of 16, Tan registered a 6-4, 6-4 win over 13th-ranked and sixth-seeded Zoe Scandalis of USC.
Mallory Burdette is also into the semifinals following two victories on Friday. Burdette breezed past Oregon's Patricia Skowronski 6-0, 6-4 in the round of 16 before defeating California's Zsofia Susanyi 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Burdette's first-set win over Susanyi represented the first time an opponent won at least five games in any set since March 30, when Burdette topped Arizona State's Michelle Brycki 7-5, 6-4.
In doubles action, the top-seeded team of Burdette and Gibbs easily dispatched Washington State's duo of Ksenia Googe and Andjela Kankaras 8-1. The quarterfinal round of doubles play begins Saturday at 9 a.m.
