Cardinal Sprint Into First at Pac-12 Championships

Feb. 23, 2012

FEDERAL WAY, Wash.-- Stanford sprinters Sam Woodward, Maddy Schaefer, Andi Murez and Betsy Webb pushed the Cardinal into first place after the first full day of racing at the Pac-12 Championships, winning the 200 free relay and all finishing in the A Final of the 50 free.

The two-time defending conference champions lead Cal 462-426.5 after winning the 200 free relay for the third-straight year, with a season-best 1:28.07. For Woodward and Webb its their third-straight conference relay title in the event, as Murez was part of last year's winner and Schafer is a freshman.

In the men's 3-meter, captain Taylor Sishc was second with a score of 371.95, followed by fourth place Connor Kuremsky (352.90) and sixth place Noah Garcia (334.80) as three Cardinal men reached the finals.

Stanford's four finalists in the 50 free propeled the Cardinal women into the lead with Webb (22.02) and Woodward (22.27) finishing third and fourth behind Cal's Liv Jensen (21.70). Webb's time was a career-best and the third-fastest time in school history.

The 50 free quartet of Webb, Woodward and sixth place Schaefer and seventh place Murez gave Stanford 100 points.

Sishc was in second place and challenging winner Ben Grado (421.60) from Arizona, until he had 5.5's on a reverse 1 1/2 somersault and 2 1/2 twist on his sixth and final dive. Kuremsky challenged for third with 8.0's and a 75.95 score on a forward 3 1/2 somersault on his fourth dive and 6.5's or 7.0's on his final two dives of the night to finish in fourth.

The Stanford women also scored 77 points in the 500 free with six swimmers in the three finals led by Andie Taylor and her 24 points and sixth place finish in the A Finals (4:44.50). Stanford had three swimmers in the B Finals led by runner-up Mackenzie Stein's time of 4:46.29.

Maya DiRado did her part, finishing third in the 200 IM remaining third throughout with a time of 1:55.42 behind USC's Katinka Hosszu (1:52.37) and Cal's Caitlin Leverenz (1:52.43).

Stephanie Phipps finished with a score of 295.25 in the finals of the 1-meter for fifth. After 7.5's and 8.0's on her first dives, she fell to 5.5's on a back 1 1/2 somersault and 6.0's on a reverse 1 1/2 somersault, before rebounding with 7.0's on her final two dives.

Phipps was fifth in the prelim 1-meter with a score of 272.65 as Sloane Brazina (12th) and Jill Fisher (18th) finished with scores of 244.00 and 209.55. That trio gave Stanford 47 points and kept the Cardinal in first heading into the final event.

Four of the top-seven spots went to the Cardinal in the 50 free prelims leading to the even 100 points later in the day.

In the prelims of the men's 3-meter, Kuremsky (352.45) was one of three Cardinal in the top-eight finals, as he was joined by Sishc (352.15) and Garcia (330.10) who were fourth and sixth, respectively. Dhruvv Tyagi (301.10) finished ninth, missing the top flight by eight points. All of those points for men's diving will count in next week's men's championships in East Los Angeles.
