BERKELEY, Calif. - Stanford freshmen Ivana Hong and Pauline Hanset earned their first collegiate victories to lead the Cardinal women's gymnastics team past Cal for the 25th consecutive time, with a 196.175-194.725 victory Sunday at Haas Pavilion.
Stanford (5-2) hasn't lost to the Golden Bears (4-3) since 2000 and is 34-1 against them since 1996.
The Cardinal swept every event, with junior Ashley Morgan winning the all-around with a score of 39.175. The Cardinal earned four scores of 9.9 or above, including Nicole Pechanec's meet-high 9.925 to win the uneven bars. Hanset won the floor exercise (9.850), Hong and Shona Morgan tied for first on the balance beam (9.90 each), and Nicole Dayton won the vault (9.875).
Hong, the U.S. elite champion on the vault and beam in 2009 and a former member of the U.S. national team, is rounding into form after being limited by an early-season ankle injury. She also scored a 9.825 on vault to finish second.
A highlight for Stanford was the official collegiate debut of sophomore captain Amanda Spinner, a Danville, Calif., native who competed for the first time in more than two years after undergoing six knee operations. Spinner scored 9.750 on the beam to place sixth.
Cal recorded its highest score in the series in its past 18 tries, since recording a 195.625 at the 2004 Pac-10 Championships in Tucson, Ariz.
Stanford took the lead from the opening routine, when Rebecca Wing led off the first rotation with a 9.825 score on the uneven bars. Stanford would score 49.400 on the event for its highest rotation score of the season, for any event. Stanford extended the lead throughout the meet.
Stanford embarks on the fourth leg of its five-weekend road stretch when it heads to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Metroplex Challenge against Brown and Bridgeport.
