Nov. 4, 2011

CHICAGO-- After the first of three days of sailing at the National Singlehanded Championships, Stanford's Kaitlyn Baab is in fifth place and Mateo Vargas is in tenth place in separate races

Baab finished with 27 points after the first four races, but was just four points behind Friday leader Mary Hall after three races. The Stanford freshman though was 11th in the fourth race to finish nine points back of the Navy sailor. Molly McKinney is 11th of the 18 sailors with 43 points, six points from the top-10.

On the men's side, Vargas finished sixth and fifth to start, but then was 14th and 15th to finish with 40 points after day one. Freshman Kieran Chung-Wolf was tied for 15th amongst the 18 sailors.

Stanford earned both spots on the men's and women's side after finishing 1-2 in the Pacific Coast Collegiate Championships in September. The singlehanded championships run through Sunday in the Windy City.
