DES MOINES, Iowa - The Cardinal track teams were back in action on Thursday for a weather shortened day two of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Before the weather could become a problem, Eda Karesin came through with a career best performance to finish as the national runner-up in the javelin.
Karesin is a Harvard transfer that has already graduated, but came to Stanford to pursue a master's degree and compete in her final year of eligibility after redshirting a year at Harvard. Karesin has had a breakthrough year for the Cardinal and it continued in Des Moines as she finished as the NCAA runner-up in the javelin, Karesin's toss of 171-8 was just off her personal best and fell just short of NCAA champion Brittany Borman of Oklahoma.
The second-place finish from Karesin earned eight team points for Stanford, who sits in fifth place with 11 points in the very early going of the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The only other competitor for Stanford before the weather delay was Kori Carter in the 100-meter hurdles. Carter placed sixth in her heat with a time of 13.50, but will not advance to the final. The race completes her NCAA Championships where Carter qualified for both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles as a freshman.
Among the events that were suspended that affect Stanford competitors were the men's 10,000 meters and the men's 4x400-meter relay. The events will be postponed to a later time, but the exact timing will not be announced until Friday morning. There is the potential for the relay to contested as a final only, but the running of the men's 10,000 will most greatly affect the Cardinal. Two of Stanford's top hopes for NCAA individual titles and athletes expected to score major points, Elliott Heath and Chris Derrick will now potentially be forced to run the 10,000 and 5,000 meters on back-to-back days.
