BERKELEY, Calif.-- In a meet that came down to the final event, No. 4-ranked Cal (7-1) upset No. 1-ranked Stanford (8-1) 155-145 in the final dual meet for the Cardinal, snapping a 33-match win streak dating back to 2007.
Cal won 10 of the 16 events, securing the win, when Liv Jensen touched the wall ahead of Kate Dwelley by six-tenths of a second to give the Bears a time of 3:15.85 in the 200 free relay ahead of the Cardinal (3:16.45) and more importantly 11 points. Jensen also touched the wall first in the opening event of the day, the 200 yard medley, and won the 50 and 100 freestyles, a key 31 points by the Cal junior.
Stanford took care of business in diving, securing at least nine points in each of the two wins. Senior Meg Hostage won the one-meter with a score of 284.92, before freshman Stephanie Phipps snapped her elder teammate's eight-event win streak by winning the three-meter (305.10) by .07 points. Hostage finished with a score of 305.03.
The distance races also came through with Kelsey Ditto (9:45.53) and Andie Taylor (9:45.84) finishing 1-2 in the 1000 free, before the senior and freshman switched places in the 500 free with Taylor winning (4:45.74) and Ditto finishing behind her (4:46.95).
Freshman Maya DiRado, who won the 200 back (1:57.08) earlier in the day, got the Cardinal within striking distance by finishing second in the 200 IM (1:58.36), the last event prior to the 200 free relay. At that point, the Cal lead was single digits.
Cal built its lead with Jensen's two wins in the sprints, sophomore Caitlin Leverenz' sweep of the 100 and 200 breaststrokes and senior Amanda Sims' two wins in the butterfly.
The rematch will take place at this year's Pac-10 Championships starting on February 23 in Federal Way, Wash. and the NCAA Championships starting on March 17 in Austin, Texas. Stanford's last dual loss came on November 9, 2007.
