Fayetteville, Ark. - Saturday marked the completion of the NCAA Indoor Championships with three more Cardinal earning All-America honors. Despite some top individual performances, the Stanford teams were not among the top finishers this season. Neither team had as many participants in this year's meet as the teams have become accustomed to.
"Our men's and women's team performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships is not reflective of our team potential and Stanford University tradition of excellence," said Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field Edrick Floreal. "The University deserves our best and we will ensure that this is the case going forward."
The men's team had a pair of distance runners compete with Dylan Ferris in the mile and Justin Marpole-Bird in the 3,000 meters. Ferris placed eighth in his first NCAA Championships to earn one team point and the first All-America honor of his career. Ferris ran a time of 4:04.73 in the event won by Lee Emanuel of New Mexico who repeated as NCAA Champion with a time of 3:59.26.
Marpole-Bird was also competing in his first NCAA track meet and placed ninth in the 3K. The redshirt junior also earns the first All-America honor of his career after running a time of 8:16.04.
The women were represented by Katerina Stefanidi in the pole vault. Stefanidi matched her collegiate best with a mark of 14-1 ¼ to tie for fifth. Stefanidi will also earn her first All-America honor while scoring 3.5 points for Stanford.
Florida won the men's team title with 57 points, while Oregon won the women's title with 61 points.
This concludes the indoor season, but the Cardinal track and field teams will be back in two weeks when it hosts the Stanford Invitational on March 26-27.
