STANFORD, Calif. – A pair of incoming Stanford freshmen rowers will represent their countries at the World Rowing U19 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria from August 6-9.
John Piersma is on his second national team for the United States and will race in the men’s four and the mixed eight. Last year, he was part of the American four that finished fourth at the U19 World Championships in Lithuania.
George Petrow is in the men’s eight for Great Britain, which has won gold at three consecutive U19 championships. Last August, he represented Great Britain in the men’s four at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Linz-Ottensheim.
Stanford is coming off a season in which it was fifth in the Ten Eyck Trophy points standings at the IRA National Championship with 209 points, tying a program record for best finish with another fifth-place result in 2009. The Cardinal was awarded the Clayton Chapman Trophy at the conclusion of racing, which is given to the school that accumulates the greatest year-over-year increase in its Ten Eyck total point count.
