LOS ANGELES – No. 1 Stanford earned its second win of the season against No. 2 UCLA, prevailing 10-9 on Saturday afternoon to claim an important tiebreaker in MPSF competition.

Juliette Dhalluin scored a game-high four goals – three coming off penalty shots – while Jenna Flynn added a hat trick and the go-ahead goal with 3:47 remaining in the final period.

Christine Carpenter made three of her five saves during an impressive fourth quarter, including the denial of a penalty shot with under three minutes remaining. Carpenter anchored Stanford’s latest defensive masterpiece, as the Cardinal has allowed fewer than 10 goals in seven games this season.

Stanford (9-0, 3-0 MPSF), which has won five in a row over the Bruins, defeated UCLA (12-2, 2-1 MPSF) 8-7 in the final of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational back on Feb. 15, securing its fourth tournament title in five seasons and eighth in school history. The Cardinal has also won seven of its nine games away from The Farm.

Stanford led for all but 49 seconds of the game, falling behind briefly at the 3:17 mark of the third quarter when UCLA moved in front 8-7.

Dhalluin scored two of her four goals in the first period, pacing the Cardinal early before Ella Woodhead’s goal one minute before the buzzer made it 4-2.

Trailing 5-3, UCLA scored back-to-back goals midway through the second quarter and the game was tied 6-6 at intermission.

UCLA’s only lead at 8-7 was quickly erased less than a minute later when Serena Browne was set up nicely by Dhalluin to make it 8-8 with 2:38 on the clock.

Dhalluin converted a penalty to open the fourth period and led 9-8 but the Bruins responded midway through the quarter to tie the contest.

Flynn, who delivered her seventh hat trick of the season and increased her team-leading goal total to 32, supplied the game-winner with 3:47 left to play.

Stanford returns to action on Sunday, March 22, hosting USC at 1 p.m. at Avery Aquatic Center.

Stanford Goals: Juliette Dhalluin (4), Jenna Flynn (3), Serena Browne (1), Reagan McEachen (1), Ella Woodhead (1).
