STANFORD, Calif. – Adding to her responsibilities within the Stanford women’s basketball program, Tempie Brown has been named the Cardinal’s General Manager. Brown will also retain her title and responsibilities as the Harry K. and Ida S. Berland Associated Head Women’s Basketball Coach.
“I am honored to undertake this role and want to thank Kate for the opportunity to impact the future of Stanford women’s basketball,” Brown said. “Stanford is fully committed to supporting our student-athletes in all facets of their life, basketball and beyond and I am grateful to be able to continue that work as the college athletics landscape evolves.”
Now in her 10th season on the Stanford staff across two stints, Brown’s new responsibilities will include management of name, image and likeness (NIL) and revenue strategy, roster and scholarship optimization, and operational and infrastructure alignment. The role will work closely with campus leaders across Stanford departments.
“Having a general manager to run point on all of these areas is more important now than ever,” said Setsuko Ishiyamam Director of Women’s Basketball Kate Paye. “Tempie has been doing a lot of this already and gives us a big advantage in an industry that is constantly changing. She’s a tireless worker who gets things done, a strong communicator and relationship-builder, and always puts our student-athletes and program first.”
During her time with the Cardinal, Stanford has gone 261-78 (.770) and made two Final Fours, four Elite Eights and seven Sweet Sixteens. The Cardinal has captured two Pac-12 regular season (2014, 2024) and three Pac-12 Tournament championships (2015, 2017, 2019) during her tenure.
Brown made a return to The Farm for the 2023-24 season following a seven-year stint from 2013-14 through 2019-20. She was elevated to associate head coach on April 23, 2024.
In her previous stint primarily working with Stanford's posts, Brown helped oversee the likes of All-American and WNBA Co-Defensive Player of the Year Alanna Smith, as well as an honorable mention All-American and now fellow coach Erica McCall. Brown also helped Stanford assemble five consecutive top-10 classes on the recruiting trail.
Prior to her arrival on The Farm in 2013, Brown spent four years at Michigan State, rising to the position of associate head coach as she helped guide the Spartans to NCAA Tournament appearances each season, as well as the program's first Big Ten title in 2011.
Brown has spent more nearly three decades in the collegiate coaching ranks. Before her time in at Michigan State, she served as an assistant coach at Memphis (2008-09), Northwestern (2004-08), Lehigh (2002-04), Eastern Michigan (2000-02) and Saginaw Valley State (1999-2000).
Brown graduated from Michigan in 1990 with a degree in kinesiology and later finished her master's degree in exercise physiology in 1992. A four-year letterwinner and two-year captain from 1986-90 with the Wolverines, Brown still ranks among the program's top 15 scorers with 1,142 points, in addition to sitting in the top 20 in career assists and steals. As a sophomore, she was recognized as an All-Big Ten honorable mention in addition to being named the team's most improved player.
