SAN DIEGO – The Cardinal picked up a conference crown, winning the PCCSC Match Race Championship in a weekend that featured a pair of second place finishes as well.
“With a tough start to the first race the Stanford match race team led by [Thomas] Sitzman did a great job clinching the PCCSC championship,” said Malin Burnham Assistant Sailing Coach Augie Dale.
Sitzmann skippered Stanford's only boat in the six-team competition, racking up an 8-2 record in the match race competition. Alice Schmid, Lucas Woodworth and Thomas Whidden all joined Sitzmann on the J-22 boat.
At the Yale-hosted Open ACC round one regatta, the Cardinal took second in the 18-team competition.
“This was the first event of the season for most of this group," said assistant coach Shawn Harvey. "We were able to pinpoint some of our weaknesses to work on in practice.”
The Cardinal's A-boat of Vanessa Lahrkamp and Piper Blackband finished fourth with 51 points, including three top-five finishes.
The B-boat of Reade Decker and Abby Baird won their division with 29 points. The boat finished first three times, and landed in the top three in all but the final race.
At the Stu Nelson Trophy, Stanford's 104 points earned a second-place finish in the 17-team regatta.
“We aren’t yet sharp, relatively speaking. But that’s to be expected, we have only just started while our competition has been sailing for over a month," said head coach Chris Klevan. "Harvard sailed especially well. To finish second, despite the youth and lack of practice time is fine with me.”
The Cardinal's A-boat of Ellie and Kit Harned finished second in their division with 35 points, including three first-place finishes. The B-boat of Samara Walshe and Kate Myles finishes fourth with 37 points, earning three top-three finishes and five times ending in the top five.
The C-boat of Callie Hammond and Alexandra Jones took second as well, picking up a first place finish and ending in the top five for six of the seven races.
Stanford has four regattas next weekend, competing at the Savin Hill Invitational, Captain Hurst Bowl, Nevins Trophy and the Women's ACC Finals.
