Stanford and Cal meet on the track for the 130th time

Live Results

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The 130th Big Meet, the track and field dual meet between Stanford and California, takes place Saturday at Cal’s Edwards Stadium.

This resumes a series that began in 1893. Cal holds a 74-53-2 lead in the men’s series and Stanford leads the women’s 29-15. Beginning in 1997, Cal leads the men’s series, 14-13, while the Stanford women lead, 20-7.

The “First Intercollegiate Field Day” between the two schools was April 22, 1893, at San Francisco’s Olympic Club Grounds. Cal won 91-35 in a men’s-only meet. Stanford won three events, highlighted by a sweep of the two-mile bicycle race, and placed first and third in the one-mile walk.

Only two sports are older than track and field at Stanford, and one of them, football, was not played from 1906-1918. Therefore, only baseball, which began in 1892, has a longer continuous tradition at Stanford.

Last year at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field, Cal won the men’s competition, 114-48, at Stanford. The Cardinal women won, 90-72. The Stanford women have won the past two matchups while the Cal men have won the past three.

This will be the fifth Big Meet for both head coaches: J.J. Clark, Stanford’s Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, and Robyne Johnson, Cal’s Director of Track and Field/Cross Country.

The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw. Running events begin at 12:05 p.m. with the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase and the meet concludes at 4:25 p.m. with the men’s 4x400 relay.

This is Stanford’s final meet before the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on May 15-17 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

In the USTFCCCA women’s rankings, Stanford is No. 22 and Cal is No. 35. In the men’s rankings, Cal is No. 52 and Stanford is No. 78.

The Big Meet takes place in a key qualifying window for the NCAA West Prelims, which takes the top 48 in each event (and 24 in relays) and is the qualifying meet for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
