Meehan Steps Away

The Paul A. Violich Director of Women's Swimming will embark on a new chapter with USA Swimming after 13 seasons on The Farm

STANFORD, Calif. - After 13 seasons at the helm of the NCAA’s most accomplished women’s swimming and diving program, Paul A. Violich Director of Women’s Swimming Greg Meehan announced his decision to step away from the Stanford program on Friday morning.

Meehan will assume a new role as National Team Managing Director with USA Swimming, the sport's national governing body in the United States.

"The last thirteen years have truly been special. The Stanford community embraced my family as their own, and its impact on all of our lives has been remarkable," Meehan said. "Stanford is a special place; not simply because of the world-class academics and campus, but because of the people. They have changed my life and I look forward to connecting with them to say 'thank you.'"

A three-time NCAA Coach of the Year, Meehan led the Cardinal to three consecutive national championships from 2017-19 and continued Stanford’s streak as the only program to never finish outside of the top-10 at the NCAA Championships. During Meehan’s tenure, he coached 33 individual national titles and 19 relay championships.

The Cardinal also won seven Pac-12 titles under Meehan, never finishing outside the top-3 of a conference meet during his tenure. A six-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year, Meehan guided his student-athletes to 67 individual conference titles, 25 relay titles, six Pac-12 Swimmers of the Year and eight Pac-12 Newcomers of the Year.

Meehan also boasts extensive coaching experience at the international level, serving as the 2020 U.S. Olympic Women's Swimming Head Coach in Tokyo, in addition to holding assistant coach roles for the 2016 Rio and 2024 Paris Games. Meehan worked extensively with Olympians Maya DiRado, Torri Huske, Katie Ledecky, Lia Neal, Simone Manuel and Paralympian Brickelle Bro, collectively earning 19 Olympic medals, including 10 golds.

Additionally, he led USA Swimming at the 2017 and 2019 World Aquatics Championships as the women’s head coach, and served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2007 World University Games, 2014 Pan Pacific Championships and the 2015 and 2022 World Aquatics Championships.

Meehan departs Stanford with an 87-7 dual meet record, finishing undefeated in nine of his 13 seasons. Prior to his arrival on The Farm, Meehan held coaching positions at California, Pacific, UCLA, Princeton and William & Mary.

"As I take on this new adventure, I feel as I did 13 years ago: grateful and excited. Thank you, Stanford."
