Seven Stanford fencers set to compete at NCAA Championships

Stanford NCAA Champions Stanford All-americans

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford's seven-person delegation heads to the NCAA Championships this weekend. Four of the seven return to the final site after competing at NCAAs last season.

Zhiyin Lin earned her first NCAA appearance after a strong senior season on The Farm. Crystal Qian, Arianna Cao, Jared Hammerstrom and Sanjay Kasi all return to the National Championships after competing at the final site last season.

Freshmen Renzo Fukuda and Sophia Chin both head to NCAAs in their first season with Stanford.

Last season, the Cardinal sent seven to the National Championships, finishing 11th in the country.

The competition is hosted by Penn State, and kicks off on Thursday. Kasi and Fukuda will be the Cardinal's first competitors, starting on Thursday at 8 a.m. PT with men's foil.

FOIL LEADING THE WAY » The Cardinal men's and women's foil squads led the way to start the season. The men's side went 20-4 on the season, while the women went 24-4. At the ACC Championships, the women's foil group went 4-0 in team competitions.

ACC MEDALISTS » Sophomore Alexander Jeon and freshman Renzo Fukuda earned ACC medals two weeks ago. Jeon took second in men's epee, while Fukuda finished third in men's foil. Ellan Wang narrowly missed a spot on the podium in women's foil, finishing fourth.

STUDENT, OLYMPIAN, COACH » Massialas is back on The Farm in a new position as first-year head coach. Massialas boasts one of the most successful fencing careers in Cardinal history, as a two time individual NCAA Champion in the men's foil (2013, 2015) at Stanford, and a three-time Olympic medalist in four trips to the Olympic Games.
