Stanford Bolsters Staff for 2025

Former Cardinal goalkeeper Drew Hutchins and Cal Poly assistant coach Woo Jeon set to join staff ahead of next season

STANFORD, Calif. - Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer Jeremy Gunn has announced two new additions to the coaching staff on Tuesday afternoon, as Drew Hutchins and Woo Jeon will join the program ahead of the 2025 season.

"Both Drew and Woo will be able to complement [assistant coach] Kevin McCarthy seamlessly, and both have great familiarity with the program after working with past staff members Oige Kennedy, Nick Kirchof, and John Smith," Gunn said. "The players and I are excited to get to work this winter, building the foundation for another exciting chapter in our program's journey."

Hutchins joins the staff as associate head coach of the Cardinal program after spending one season as an assistant coach for NC State. During his time in Raleigh, Hutchins helped lead the Wolfpack to a 10-5-5 season and an NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance. Under his guidance, NC State had three All-ACC honorees in 2024.

Before arriving at NC State, Hutchins spent eight years as the associate head coach at Cornell under former Stanford assistant John Smith, where he helped the program to a 62-44-12 record. His leadership contributed to four consecutive 10-win seasons (2018-22) for the first time in Cornell’s history, during which the Big Red posted a 46-18-5 overall record and 16-8-4 mark in Ivy League play. Over his eight seasons on staff, Hutchins helped coach 21 student-athletes to 32 All-Ivy League selections.

Hutchins makes his return to The Farm after playing at Stanford from 2010-2013, where he made 43 starts in 46 appearances between the posts for Stanford and earned an All-Pac 12 selection in 2013. Hutchins started every game in his final two seasons with a 1.17 goals against advantage, leading Stanford to an NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance his senior year. Hutchins was also a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic team member and a Capital One Academic All-District 8 team selection during his Cardinal career.

"Drew was a cornerstone of our program in my early years here at Stanford and we are extremely excited for him to rejoin our program after a 10-year hiatus," said Gunn "He set the standard in every way, and it has been no surprise that he has carved out an exceptional career as a college coach."

A native of Morrisville, PA, Hutchins graduated from Stanford in 2014 with a degree in Technology and Society.

Jeon, set to serve as assistant coach for the Cardinal, arrives on The Farm after a two-year tenure with the Cal Poly men’s soccer program, most recently serving as associate head coach in 2024. During his time in San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly made two Big West Championship appearances and earned the program’s first Big West regular season title in 2024.

Primarily working with the defenders, Jeon guided the Mustangs to the nation's second-best goals-against average (0.676) and the fewest goals conceded in program history (13) in 2024. Under Jeon’s guidance, the Mustangs had six All-Big West honorees in each of the last two seasons, including 2024 Big West Defender of the Year Parker Owens.

Before Cal Poly, Jeon spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Division II MSU Denver where he helped lead the Roadrunners to a 10-win season in 2022, the program’s highest win total since 2016. Jeon’s first season on staff in 2021 saw MSU Denver return to the RMAC tournament after a three-year hiatus.

Jeon’s coaching career began with Black Rock FC Residential Academy (Lake Placid, N.Y.), where he served as an associate head coach for three years. Jeon led his age-group side to a No. 2 national ranking in TopDrawerSoccer’s prep high school poll in 2019 and guided Black Rock FC’s USL League Two squad to the 2019/20 IMG Cup U-20 championship.

Before transitioning into coaching, Jeon played four seasons at Division III Kenyon College (Gambler, Ohio) where he helped the Lords reach back-to-back NCAA Division III quarterfinal appearances (2015-16) and four total NCAA tournament berths. Making 53 starts in 86 career appearances, Jeon finished his playing career with 21 goals and 18 assists, leading Kenyon to a 73-10-6 overall mark and 32-3-1 record in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

"Woo brings a wealth of knowledge to our program, having great success in his formative years as a coach," Gunn said "His bright mind and deep analytical personality will bring valuable insight and energy to our program"

A native of Madison, Wisc., Jeon graduated from Kenyon in 2018 with a degree in neuroscience.

Hutchins and Jeon are set to replace former Cardinal assistants Ben Moane and Jack Winter, who left the program to pursue new career opportunities after the 2024 season.

"We want to convey our deepest gratitude for the phenomenal impact that Ben and Jack had on our program as we wish them a fond farewell," coach Gunn said of his former assistants. "They join a special list of people who we have had the great pleasure of working with in the coaching ranks."

Stanford looks ahead to the 2025 campaign after reaching its third consecutive NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2024. The Cardinal has tallied three NCAA championships, four College Cup berths, and 11 NCAA tournament appearances during Gunn's tenure on The Farm.
