STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford sailing closed out the fall slate with a pair of regattas over the weekend, finishing fourth in its first national championship regatta of the season at the ICSA Match Race Championships in Oyster Bay, New York.
The Cardinal also competed in the PCCSC Open Championships, taking home top honors in the 19-team field to conclude the fall slate with a conference win and Stanford's ninth regatta win of the season.
ICSA Match Race competition began on Friday with the round-robin portion of the regatta, as Stanford came away with a 4-5 record in stage one. The Cardinal earned race victories over Boston College, Charleston, Harvard, and Chicago.
With five programs tied with four wins after the round-robin, Stanford was dropped to the Repechage Group via tiebreaker criteria but would sweep the group in stage two to advance to Sunday's knockout round.
Stanford would then meet Yale in the quarterfinal, winning two consecutive races in the best-of-three format to reach the semifinals, but the Cardinal's national title hopes would be dashed one round later in the semifinals after dropping straight races to eventual champion Boston College. Stanford closed out the regatta in the petit final against Coast Guard, dropping two of three races to ultimately finish fourth.
Chapman Petersen led the charge as the Stanford skipper, while Thomas Sitzmann, Lucas Woodworth, and Alice Schmid served as crews throughout the weekend.
At the PCCSC Open Championships, Stanford showcased yet another dominant performance to win another conference title, scoring 60 points across three divisions to finish well ahead of UC Santa Barbara (122 points) and San Diego State (130.)
Vanessa Lahrkamp and Piper Blackband were dominant in the A boat, notching five wins in eight races to lead the division with 12 points. Lahrkamp and Blackband never placed lower than third in the event.
Reade Decker and Abby Baird saw the same success in the B boat with six wins en route to 15 points, while the freshman while the freshman duo of Thomas Whidden and Alexandra Jones notched 33 points in the C boat to finish second in the division.
Now at the conclusion of the 2024 fall campign, Stanford will enjoy the holiday break before returning to action for an action-packed schedule in the spring.
