ST. MARY'S, Md. - Stanford continued the fall season over the weekend in two challenging competitions, racing in both the Women's ACC Championships Round 1B and the Danmark Trophy.
"The team is coming together," said head sailing coach Chris Klevan. "We are realizing what is required to be the team we want to become and we see the bar. I'm excited to see what is possible when we come together fully."
Stanford came out on top in Maryland, claiming a regatta victory in the Women's ACC Championship Round 1B while finishing 10th overall in the Danmark Trophy.
"The ladies found the right way around the race course in some tricky conditions," said the Malin Burnham Assistant Sailing Coach Augie Dale. "Both divisions had a very impressive record and came away on top."
Hosted by Saint Mary's College of Maryland, The Women's ACC Championships Round 1B featured an impressive field of 17 teams in Maryland. Stanford decisively took first place after 17 races each in the A and B divisions.
The Cardinal wrapped up the event with 143 points, 44 points better than second-placed Boston College. Stanford finished in the top three in 22 of the 34 total races in the event, including nine first place finishes.
Vanessa Lahrkamp and Gwendolyn Donahue took control of the A division duties, leading Stanford to a dominant 57 points and the best mark among A boats. Dartmouth finished in second in the division, totaling 64 points.
The Cardinal also took first in the B division, this time led by Hannah Freeman and Isabelle McNabb. The pair scored 86 points, topping Boston College's 99 for second place.
Meanwhile, in New London, Connecticut, Stanford competed in the Danmark Trophy, taking 10th overall out of 20 teams.
"The all first year squad learned a lot of valuable lessons regarding how to sail the current and stay disciplined in their collegiate sailing debuts," said assistant sailing coach Shawn Harvey.
The Cardinal finished with 269 points, just five points outside of eighth place. Stanford fielded a full team of freshmen in Connecticut, with Reade Decker and Alice Schmid leading the A division effort to a ninth place standing.
In the B division, Thomas Sitzmann, Luke Woodworth, and Shay Wood combined to finish 12th.
Stanford returns to action next weekend, competing in two more regattas. The Cardinal will head back to Connecticut for the Stu Nelson competition and to Cambridge for the Open ACC Championships Round 1.
