LOS ANGELES - Stanford earned a decisive victory in the South Designate this weekend, finishing in first place by a wide margin over the rest of the field. The Cardinal's 36 points were 60 better than the next closest finisher, UCLA.
"The team showed their prowess in the heavier sea breeze; winning multiple races by nearly a minute," said assistant sailing coach Shawn Harvey. "Sportsmanship trophy goes to the team, particularly Vanessa Lahrkamp, for jumping in the water and helping right a struggling competitor's boat for them. I'm proud of them for doing the right thing."
Stanford was dominant while racing, securing 19 wins in the 24 total races across the A and B divisions. In all but one A division race, Stanford took the top spot.
Vanessa Lahrkamp skippered for the Cardinal in the A division while Gwendolyn Donahue managed the crewing duties. The pair combined for 14 points after their 12 races.
In the B division, Sophie Fisher and Patricia Gerli represented Stanford, earning 22 points. Their score was 27 points better than the next closest B division boat.
The Cardinal returns to action next weekend, competing in two regattas. Stanford Women's Sailing will head to the Dellenbaugh Women's Team Race while the Coed Sailing Team will compete in the Marchiando Team Race.
