Columbus, OH - Stanford's two singles players advanced today with straight set wins over ranked opponents while the lone Cardinal doubles team fell and will enter the consolation bracket at the ITA National Indoor Championships hosted by Ohio State University at the Racquet Club in Columbus, Ohio.
Freshman Alex Clayton defeated 65th Dominic Inglot of Virginia 6-1, 7-6(5) in the first round of the elite 32 man main draw to improve his record verse nationally ranked opponents to 6-1. Sophomore Richard Wire also advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over South Alabama's 68th ranked Jack Baker. Stanford's lone setback was doubles team of Ted Kelly and Blake Muller, who fell to 40th ranked Andy Connelly and Ross Cunningham 9-7. With their first round loss, they will enter the consolation bracket tommorrow.
Clayton will play Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine, ranked 31st in the nation, while Wire will play Adam Holmstrom of Denver. Kelly and Muller will play 20th ranked Jonas Berg and Erling Tveit of Mississippi tomorrow in consolation play.
Wire punched his ticket to this elite tournament when he won the ITA Regional Championships, while Clayton earned a wild card draw after reaching the semifinals of the All-American Championships before losing to eventual champion Travis Helgeson of Georgia. Kelly and Muller won the doubles draw at the ITA Regional Championships to earn a bid.
