Top-Ranked Stanford Water Polo Upset By No. 3 UCLA

STANFORD, Calif. - UCLA's Sean Kern scored the game-winning goal with 22 seconds to play to lift the third-ranked Bruin water polo team to a 6-5 victory over previously unbeaten Stanford in a MPSF game Saturday at deGuerre Pool.

Kern had earlier pulled UCLA to within one goal, 3-2, with one second to play in the third period.

UCLA tied the game at 3-3 with 6:17 to play on a goal by Adam Wright. Pasi Dutton then hit a two-point goal for Stanford to give the Cardinal a 5-3 lead. Mark Armato tied the game at 5-5 with a two-point goal with 4:29 to play, setting up the winning goal by Kern.

A defensive struggle dominated play in the first half as UCLA held a 1-0 halftime lead. Stanford exploded for three points in the third period to take a 3-1 lead, its biggest margin of the game.

Stanford, 6-1, hosts fourth-ranked UC Irvine on Sunday at noon at deGuerre Pool.
